British Diplomat Had Doubts About McCanns

A British diplomat warned the Foreign Office of concerns regarding Mad­eleine McCann’s parents, it emerged last night. Doubts about Kate and Gerry McCann were raised almost immediately by an official sent to Praia da Luz due to what he considered to be “inconsistencies” in the couple’s testimonies about the night the four-year-old vanished. The warning was contained in a classified document sent from the Algarve to the Foreign Office days after Madeleine’s disappearance. Details of the letter have been leaked through the British diplomatic mission in Brussels to the respected Belgian newspaper Derniere Heure.

The unnamed diplomat voices his concern about the “confused declarations” as to the whereabouts of Kate and Gerry McCann and their friends in the final hours before Madeleine’s disappearance. He also mentions the couple’s “lack of co-operation” with the Portuguese police in the light of instructions from London suggesting consular staff “overstretch their authority and put pressure on the Portuguese authorities”. The document also asks for confirmation of orders sent by the Foreign Office in London the day before, commanding embassy staff to give “all possible assistance to the McCann couple”.

Diplomats on the Algarve were told the McCanns had to be “accompanied at all times during any contact with the Portuguese police” by a member of consular staff or by British police officers sent out from the UK. The letter, sent just days after Madeleine disappeared, warns of the risks of siding with the McCanns so completely. Excerpts published in a report by La Derniere Heure quote the diplomat as saying: “With the greatest respect, I would like to make you aware of the risks and implications to our relationship with the Portuguese authorities, if you consider the possible involvement of the couple. “Please confirm to me, in the light of these concerns, that we want to continue to be closely involved in the case as was requested in your previous ­message.”

A huge team of diplomats have been involved in the case since Gerry McCann asked the Foreign Office for help. In an unprecedented move, the then Prime Minister Tony Blair despatched special envoy Sheree Dodd, a former Fleet Street journalist, to Portugal to act as a “med­ia liaison officer” for the McCann family. Direct government communications with the McCanns came to an abrupt halt, however, when the couple were made official suspects in the case in September.

Portuguese detectives believe it is possible Madeleine died as the result of an accident on May 3 in the family’s holiday apartment and that her parents hid and later disposed of her body with the help of their friends. The couple have always said they had nothing to do with their daughter’s disappearance. The Belgian report says it is highly significant that almost all of the diplomats involved at the outset have now been taken off the case.

Special envoy Sheree Dodd has since resigned from the Foreign Office, the British consul in the Algarve Bill Henderson has retired and the British ambassador to Portugal John Buck is no longer in Portugal. Last night the Foreign Office refused to comment on the report.

Madeleine McCann’s four-year-old twin siblings are now slowly grasping the horror of her abduction, their parents revealed yesterday.

Sean and Amelie were just two when their big sister was snatched but Kate and Gerry have since gradually explained the grim truth to them.

It is poignantly clear the youngsters still hold Madeleine close to their hearts.

Gerry, 41, said: “They talk about her more than Kate and I do. It’s incredible.

“They don’t ask so many direct questions but as they’re getting older more of the gaps are being filled in.

“They know Madeleine’s missing, they believe she has been taken and they know it’s not right that she has been taken. They understand the person who has taken Madeleine has done something very bad.

“They have asked why she’s been taken and we said, ‘We don’t know, but obviously they wanted Madeleine’. They know it’s not right and they want her back.”

Kate, also 41, added: “We made it as light as possible for Sean and Amelie but in a way they can understand.

“We made it sound like, ‘Even if you really want something you shouldn’t take it if it belongs to someone else’.”

The kids, who now attend school, are so heartbroken at having Madeleine ripped out of their lives they have even vowed to attack the kidnapper when he is caught.

Heart specialist Gerry revealed: “They’re saying, ‘When we find who took her we will fight them’. That doesn’t come directly from us saying that.

“Amelie this week was saying, ‘When I find that man I’m going to do this and that’. I said, ‘No, we will give them to the police and then we’ll put them in jail’.”

Since Madeleine’s May 2007 abduction in Praia da Luz, Portugal, her bedroom at the family home in Rothley, Leics, has remained just as she left it.

Maddie's little brother and sister are learning to cope with their devastating loss by playing a game called Find The Monster Who Snatched Her.

And three-year-old twins Sean and Amelie are also playing a vital role in keeping their mum and dad focused, according to top criminologist Ray Wyre.

He told The People last night: "I think having other very young children has given Kate and Gerry the strength to go on.

"It must be hard for them because the twins are now almost the same age as Maddie was when she was taken.

"But they are clearly a bundle of energy and fun.

"They still talk about Madeleine and even bring her into their games."

Wyre went on: "Kate and Gerry told me they were sitting together the other day when the twins rushed into the room screaming and shouting.

"They asked what they were up to and the twins told them they were going to go and find the monster that took Maddie.

"Then they dashed off to play the game."

A senior Portuguese police officer has condemned the parents of Madeleine McCann for creating a “monster of information” that has failed to help in finding their daughter.

Carlos Anjos, president of the Association of Criminal Investigation Staff, said that detectives had advised Kate and Gerry McCann against their media campaign. They had also warned the couple against drawing attention to Madeleine's distinctive right eye, saying that it could have put her life in greater danger.

The disappearance of Madeleine shortly before her fourth birthday has become one of Europe's most-reported stories after the McCanns made a series of international visits to promote the search for their daughter.

Mr Anjos said that that to “keep pushing stories into the papers — they have clearly not helped solve the case”.

“Quite honestly I don't know if that is good or bad for an investigation,” he told the BBC Radio 4 Inside Stories programme today. “We were against this from the start. And importantly, we were against the release of Madeleine McCann's photo all over the world.

“We thought the photos that were released should not show the distinct mark Maddie had in her left eye. From our experience in criminal investigations this was a kidnap, which was what we believed from the start, the revealing of such a distinct feature would put that person's life in danger.” more The times

Madeleine: Trust The Portuguese Cops?

The Madeleine appeal relies on the assumption that someone knows her abductor but won't tell because of love, loyalty or fear.

It would be unusual if no-one knew, or was at least suspicious.

The success of the appeal also hinges on that person's guilt at not divulging the secret.

Detectives insist that relationships change and the justification for someone's silence might no longer be so strong.

But.

Any information that emerges will be given to the Portuguese police for them to pursue.

As they have already failed the McCanns can they be relied on to do the right thing next time?

But what did Mr. Martin Brunt forget, while “separating facts from fiction”, in his special report about Madeleine's investigation?

He forget to mention what was the reason of a “dramatic twist” in the case, after “the apartment was re-examined”. Mr. Martin Brunt refers the “dramatic twist, so far” and then jumps immediately to the moment when “Kate McCann was ordered in for questioning” at the PJ headquarters in Portimão. Gerry McCann was next and both were named formal suspects.

Why did it happened, that “dramatic twist”? Why did Mr. Marin Brunt forget to explain the reasons for this “dramatic twist”? This second question only can be answered by Mr. Martin Brunt – and I believe Sky News viewers would like very much to know his explanation.

What we can do, with the help of British Press, is to answer the first question, remind Mr. Brunt of the reasons for that “dramatic twist” and about many other facts that he manipulated, distorted and omitted in his special “report”:
